![]() ![]() In 2017, the song was featured as the lead cut on Kent Soul’s excellent compilation, Nothing But a House Party – The Birth of the Philly Sound 1967-1971, a Compilation of the Year pick by London-based Soul Brother Records.Īs Tony Rounce of Kent Soul explains in his excellent liner note to the release, “In the same way the Motown Sound really came together after the company started recording almost exclusively in its own premises, the Philly Sound quickly took shape once Joe Tarsia, the former chief engineer at Cameo-Parkway Studios, opened Sigma Sound in 1968.” Frequenters of the Soul Source website may be familiar with the song from its release on Beacon in 1968 (more on that below). ![]() Miller is on tour in Texas this week with stops in Austin on Thursday Houston on Saturday and his childhood hometown of Dallas on Sunday.Anyone who grew up listening to pop or R&B radio in Philadelphia (as I did) in the late 1960’s is familiar with The Show Stoppers’ raucous hit, “Ain’t Nothin’ But a House Party”. With today's announcement comes the release of “The Joker Suite,” an extended piece showcasing the coming together of the title track with the previously unreleased “Lidi” and “Travelin’.” ![]() There are also an additional eight previously unreleased songs as well as six audio commentary tracks and exclusive liner notes from Miller and journalist Anthony DeCurtis. These include songwriting tapes he made in hotel rooms and during shows, plus studio outtakes and rehearsals. J50: The Evolution of The Joker was curated by Miller who chronologically placed the original album tracks alongside 27 previously unreleased recordings from his archive.
